I saw a tweet as I was scrolling yesterday and it said something like, “Good news! Maybe you can meet Jared Leto as he hitchhikes across America.” And all I could think was, Wait, I’m not sure I want to meet Jared Leto. Guess I’ll have to stay off the roads for a while because apparently, he’s coming, US folks.

Jared Leto is going on a cross-country trip.

The 46-year-old actor announced he’s hitchhiking across America in honor of his band Thirty Seconds to Mars releasing its new album: America.

“Yeah, it’s a pretty adventure,” the Oscar winner said on Monday’s episode of On Air With Ryan Seacrest. “I’m going to hitchhike among other things across the country from New York City to Los Angeles. I’m going to jump on a donkey in a Grand Canyon or take a hot air balloon.”

So, it’s a promotional stunt for his album, which is out April 6. I guess that makes this stunt more interesting. There are other members of Thirty Seconds to Mars, including Jared’s brother Shannon, but so far, it sounds like only Jared will make the whole trip. His first stop was at The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon where he claimed to be “lost” and then hitched a ride with A$AP Rocky who was conveniently parked in front of 30 Rockefeller. If it was guaranteed safe, hitchhiking would be a great way to see America. Not only the scenery but meeting so many different people and getting their stories. That said, I think we know it’s almost always not safe for the not-Jared Letos of the world so kids, don’t try this at home.

Jared is giving impromptu performances along the way that are being posted to social media. Again, as album promotion goes, this is a clever concept. He joined a gospel choir at Penn Station in New York:

Since I suspect there aren’t roving choirs who just happen to know the new music off the latest TStM album, clearly this was planned. Which begs the question, how much of his trip is planned? He stopped by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland and announced plans to go to Chicago to see the Skydeck. He mentioned riding a donkey in the Grand Canyon. He also said he’s going to make this trip in a week. Between all the scheduled stops and the aggressive timeframe, I can’t see much actual hitchhiking going on.

Jared told Ryan Seacrest that he used to hitchhike a lot as a kid, so I’m sure he knows all he needs to. But if he’s forgotten anything, he can always call Shia LaBoeuf, who already tried this shtick.

I gotta say that Rescue Me acoustic with just @StevieAiello's guitar and the purity of @JaredLeto's voice is entrancing! 👏🏼 #MarsAcrossAmerica @30SECONDSTOMARS pic.twitter.com/enzjadkKzB
